Being asked to design and illustrate the cover of the Fortune 500 is no small deal. It's one of the most coveted jobs in the editorial design community and is the biggest issue of the year for Fortune.
Published since 1956, past covers have featured designs by Erik Nitsche, Chermayoff & Geismar Associates, and Milton Glaser to name just a few. It's an honor to be in such legendary company. It's safe to say that the nature of the Fortune 500 cover has change dramatically over the past 60 years. It's moved away from the more pictorial and explorative executions that made it so iconic in the 50's and 60's and has evolved to be a typographic challenge. This direction is fueled by brand recognition, newsstand sales, and the desire for pure unadulterated editorial impact. Since this issue is such a huge seller for Fortune it needs to have be extremely effective in the newsstand environment. This means type that is legible on a crowded magazine rack from at least 20 ft. away! Our solution has been to create custom typography that is visually complex and rich but also reads extremely well from long distances. We've had the pleasure to accept this challenge three different times.
