The Fortune Chartist column takes a data driven or statistical approach to the editorial process. Often times the data being visualized can be quite dense and it becomes a challenge to fit the shear quantities in question on a magazine page. For example the "CSI: Wall Street" graphic to the right demanded that we visualize how the SEC sifts through millions and millions of documents to find the "smoking gun" document in criminal investigations. These are just the kind of challenges we like. We worked with the research and editorial staff at Fortune to distill the SEC investigation process down to four key phases. Using databases, computers, algorithms and sheer man power the SEC can effectively find just a few incriminating bits of information out of a sea of data. We visualized the quantities at each phase with a supporting image that illustrates the search method employed. In the end we effectively displayed an excruciatingly complex and mundane process in an authoritative, fun and concise way. Give it a read and you'll think twice about that insider stock tip your uncle just emailed you.
